Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy
What is therapy and how does it work?
Therapy, also known as psychotherapy or counseling, is a collaborative process where I use various psychological techniques, such as cognitive-behavioral strategies, mindfulness, and insight-oriented approaches, to help you improve your mental health, address emotional difficulties, and overcome life challenges.
What are the benefits of therapy?
Therapy can help you gain self-awareness and understanding, develop coping skills, and improve communication. It can also assist you in managing stress and anxiety, processing trauma, building healthy relationships, and navigating life transitions.
What is the cost of therapy sessions?
Therapy sessions cost $200 for individual sessions and $225 for couples sessions. I also offer some lower-fee slots on a sliding scale for those in need and provide reduced rates for EMDR to first responders. Please note that EMDR therapy and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) sessions are priced differently, as they generally require longer sessions, typically an hour and a half to two hours. Feel free to contact me for more details on sliding scale options and EMDR or KAP rates.
How can I schedule a therapy appointment?
You can schedule an appointment by phone, email, or through the contact form on my website. I also offer a free 20-minute phone consultation to discuss your needs and determine if we are a good fit.
What happens during the first therapy session?
In our first session, we'll focus on gathering information, discussing your goals for therapy, and establishing a trusting relationship. This intake session helps us determine if we are a good match and sets the foundation for our collaborative work together. I will ask about your background, current concerns, and expectations.
How does online therapy work?
Teletherapy, or online therapy, involves meeting with me remotely via a secure, HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform. This offers convenience and accessibility, allowing you to attend sessions from the comfort of your home.
How often do you need therapy?
The frequency of our sessions will be determined collaboratively based on your needs and goals. I typically recommend starting with weekly sessions to build rapport and establish a strong foundation. Over time, the frequency may change depending on your progress and needs, often shifting to bi-weekly or even monthly sessions.
How long should therapy last?
The duration of therapy varies based on the complexity of your concerns, your progress, and your goals. Some people benefit from short-term therapy (6-12 sessions), while others find long-term therapy more beneficial. Ultimately, how long you continue is up to you, and we will make that decision together to ensure it aligns with your needs and comfort.
Is therapy confidential?
I am bound by confidentiality, which means that I cannot disclose anything we discuss in our sessions without your consent. There are a few legal exceptions, such as instances involving child abuse or if you are at risk of harming yourself or others.
How do you choose the best therapist for you?
Choosing the right therapist is essential for a successful experience. Consider factors like personality fit, specialization, approach, and practical considerations such as location, fees, and insurance coverage. It can be helpful to have a brief consultation with potential therapists to see if they are a good match for you. I offer free consultation calls so you can determine if my approach fits your needs.
